What happens if a resident’s needs change?

Lakeshore Woods Senior Living offers Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care on one Fort Gratiot campus. This can make future conversations easier because residents and families can learn about several levels of senior living from one team.

Any move to another level of care requires a conversation and assessment. Placement depends on the resident’s needs, the services Lakeshore Woods can safely provide and current availability. A transfer, specific residence or timeline is not guaranteed.

Independent Living versus Assisted Living

Independent Living is generally for older adults who manage personal care and medications independently but want fewer household responsibilities. Assisted Living adds individualized help with daily activities based on an assessment and care plan. Families who are unsure should describe the person’s current routine and support needs honestly so the Lakeshore Woods team can explain the appropriate next step.

Independent Living at Lakeshore Woods, What's Included

Chef-Prepared Meals

Residents can enjoy prepared meals in a shared dining setting without planning, shopping for and cooking every meal. Ask to see a current sample menu during a visit, especially when dietary preferences or restrictions are part of the decision.

Housekeeping & Laundry

Routine housekeeping and laundry reduce the work of maintaining a home. The team will explain the current schedule and exactly what is included with an Independent Living residence.

24/7 On-Site Staff

Staff members are available on the Lakeshore Woods campus 24 hours a day. This offers added reassurance, but it does not turn Independent Living into a personal-care or medical service. Families should ask what assistance is available specifically to Independent Living residents.

Wellness Checks

Wellness checks offer an additional point of contact for residents and families. The Lakeshore Woods team should explain how checks are scheduled, what they include and when a changing need may require a different level of support.

Transportation

Scheduled transportation helps residents reach planned appointments, errands or community activities. Confirm the current schedule, notice requirements and service area during a tour.

Social Activities

Residents can choose from community activities based on their interests and preferred level of participation. Ask to review a current activity calendar rather than relying on a general list of programs.

Community Amenities

Shared indoor and outdoor spaces give residents places to dine, visit, relax and take part in community life. During a tour, families should see the spaces residents use on an ordinary day.

What is Independent Living at Lakeshore Woods?

Independent Living is designed for older adults who can manage their daily personal care but would rather spend less time cooking, cleaning, maintaining a home or arranging transportation. It provides a private place to live within a community built around daily convenience, social connection and peace of mind.

At Lakeshore Woods, Independent Living is located on our 7-acre campus at 4851 Lakeshore Rd in Fort Gratiot. Assisted Living and Memory Care are also available on the campus. A change in care is never automatic or guaranteed; it depends on an individual assessment, current needs and availability.

Who may be a good fit for Independent Living?

  • Independent Living may be appropriate for an older adult who manages medications and personal care independently.
  • It may help someone who wants relief from cooking, housekeeping, laundry or home maintenance.
  • It can suit someone who would benefit from meals, transportation, activities and shared spaces nearby.
  • It may appeal to an older adult who prefers living around peers rather than living alone.
  • It can help a family plan ahead by placing several senior-living options on one campus.

Independent Living is not a substitute for Assisted Living, Memory Care, skilled nursing or emergency medical care. If someone needs regular help with bathing, dressing, medication management, mobility or other personal-care tasks, the Lakeshore Woods team can explain whether an Assisted Living assessment would be more appropriate.

After researching, interviewing, and touring multiple assisted living options for our loved one, Lakeshore Woods stood out above the rest! In just a matter of weeks, our family member has come to love this new home and all the staff! We are so grateful to Lakeshore Woods, not just because it is a beautiful facility with exceptional amenities for their residents and provides high quality care, but that we can now rest at night knowing our loved one is safe.

I've had family and friends here at this home, the staff is knowledgeable, respectful and they genuinely care about those who reside here. I've been visiting friends recently and see nothing but improvements in the facility, upgraded flooring in the older building, a new cook providing a variety of new dishes for the residents. The staff changes, positive output and support is top notch. I would highly recommend this care facility to family and friends.

My experience with Lakeshore Woods has been overwhelmingly positive. From the moment I first walked through the doors, the staff was warm, welcoming, and informative. The facility itself is clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. Common areas are inviting and well-maintained, and the private rooms feel more like cozy apartments than clinical settings. There are a variety of activities offered daily—everything from arts and crafts to movie nights and fitness classes—which have helped many of our residents to stay engaged and social.

The care staff and Med - Tech's care about their residents and get to know them so they can give them the best care they need. They are also friendly to their family members and reach out to them with any concerns and our great listening to the family concerns . They always take the time with residents and family to lend an ear if they need to talk about anything. It's a clean nice place for them to live at with fun activities to do. They get three good meals a day. The rooms are set up nice so they have their own private living area.

Awesome facility and very kind workers that try their best. Dont listen to the negative comments they’re overreacting and trashing the place, i never once experienced that and the managers there do their best and theyre the ones that stay over 16 hours to pick up what other coworkers dumped on them in order to keep the place running. Amazing place to work and to send your folks!!🤍
